Takeaway quality without the price – our Gousto introduction!

As a family we used to get takeaway on a Saturday evening at a cost of around £45. As I mentioned in a previous post as 2020 progressed our spending on takeaway food increased, massively. We spent a whopping £1890 between May and December on eating out and takeaways! I felt sick seeing that figure. Goodness knows what my insides look like eating all that either but it wont be pretty!

When we committed to no spend we didn’t want the children to feel like they were being punished and we want it to be sustainable so we needed something to replace the takeaways so they still felt they were getting a treat. Fakeaways at home work but theres only so many times I can make the same curry or burgers before the kids get bored.

We had used Hello Fresh before but found the family options were lacking and you only got around 6 choices. After a bit of research, we decided to try Gousto as a monthly treat. We would get 4 meals for 4 people for the same price as 1 of our Saturday night takeaways. As a bonus a friend already had Gousto boxes so gave me a discount code for 50% off my first box and 30% off the next which meant we only paid £23.80 for our first box. £1.49 per portion isn’t bad for a takeaway swap!

Gousto offer around 55 choices each week. There were plenty vegan, vegetarian and fish choices too. As there are 4 of us we each picked a dish we fancied the sound of and waited patiently for it to arrive. In our first box we picked Smoky Fish Cakes, Greens & Curried Mayo (Child 2), Onion Bhaji Burger with Coconut Raita (Me), Smoky Chicken Skewers with Pepper Salsa (Doug) & one-pot Chicken Rogan Josh with Yoghurt (Child 1).

The box arrived on time, well packaged and almost everything is recyclable. There was a little cool pack section for the fish, meat and dairy and a dry section for the vegetables. Each recipe has a number and there’s a corresponding numbered bag for each with the herbs & spices inside. As a nice touch we received a Gousto branded wooden spoon.

Each recipe is so easy to follow and apart from the odd bit of oil and butter we didn’t need to add anything else. We graded each of them out of 5.

Smoky Fishcakes, Greens & Curried Mayo

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

The fishcakes were delicious and even though the curry mayo sounded a bit strange it really worked. Both kids demolished them and even gave the greens a go. We gave this 3.5 because they were quite difficult to shape and could have done with less potato.

Onion Bhaji Burger with Coconut Raita

Rating: 5 out of 5.

These were so good! Completely plant based but definitely not lacking in flavour! These were quick to make and really filling. The mango chutney and coconut raita go together really well. The chilli wedges on the side complemented the burger really well.

Smoky Chicken Skewers with Pepper Salsa

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

The chicken was really tasty and the chipotle mayo drizzled over was perfectly spiced and not overpowering. We felt the diced potatoes didn’t really bring anything to the dish and would have preferred a flatbread or pitta instead. We will make these again but substitute the potatoes for a flatbread.

One-pot Chicken Rogan Josh with Yoghurt

Rating: 5 out of 5.

What can I say…in this house we absolutely love curry. I have never made one in the oven before but it wont be the last time. This was 5 minutes to prep and then went in the oven for 35 minutes. The meat was so tender. There was so much flavour in the sauce and it has most def become a family favourite. We did previously say that we would be doing a themed Saturday night so along with the curry we made rice, chicken pakora, onion bhaji, naan breads and mango chutney.

Overall Gousto worked for us and we’ve our next box coming in February. This time there’s carbonara pizza, sticky chinese pork, another curry and a potato topped chicken pie. We have really enjoyed cooking together again and we haven’t missed our takeaways.

If you want to ditch the takeaways and give Gousto a go then my code will give you 50% off your first box no matter if it’s for 2 or 4 people and 2 or 4 meals. Plus, you will get a further 30% off all other boxes during that month. I get £15 credit towards further boxes too. Click here to get started with my coupon code on Gousto!
